Finding Arundel
Discovering Arundel
Arundel is the Historic Heart of the
South Downs and
your first view of the town is guaranteed to take your breath away.
Dominated by the 11th Century Norman Castle and Roman Catholic
gothic cathedral which sit side-by-side, high on a hillside,
Arundel has quaint narrow streets, specialist shops and a good mix
of restaurants and bars, including our own.
Historic and beautiful – that's the best way to describe charming
Arundel.
Arundel Castle has been home to the Dukes of Norfolk
& their ancestors for over 850 years and is well worth a visit.
So too is the
Cathedral of Our Lady & St Philip Howard - a
Victorian Gothic Catholic Cathedral designed by Joseph Hansom who
designed the Hansom Cab. Close by is St Nicholas Church and the
Fitzalan Chapel. This unique building accommodates a Church of
England and a Catholic section. Entrance to the Church of England
church is on London Road and the Catholic chapel is accessed
through the Castle grounds!
Arundel Wetland Centre has 26 hectares of naturalised
landscapes and wetland habitats holding many hundreds of exotic
wildfowl from around the world.Set in ancient woodlands in the
middle of the South Downs; adjacent to the River Arun; overlooked
by the historic Arundel Castle skyline the centre also attracts
many wild birds to the lakes, reed beds and woodland areas on the
site. Free Safaris on quiet, electric boats are offered everyday
weather permitting. Gliding along the waterways of the new Wetlands
Discovery area you can discover the joys of seeing wild flora &
fauna in their natural environment.
Chalk
Spring Fishery is situated in an attractive woodland valley on
the Duke of Norfolk's Estate at Arundel, West Sussex. Although only
a few minutes from the centre of the town, with its distant view of
the cathedral, it provides an ideal and tranquil venue for fly
fishing. The fishery has about five acres of water and is fed by
natural springs, helping to keep the lakes cool and crystal clear
throughout the year. The excellent clarity of the water offers
fishermen a unique opportunity to stalk high quality brown and
rainbow trout.
Discovering West Sussex
Pulborough is home to
West Sussex Golf Club. It is an exceptional home.
Most holes are visually stunning, with clear definition from
skilful use of heather and sand, natural placement of fairway and
green and views to Sussex countryside. It is a lasting testament to
its designers and to the meticulous care with which it is still
tended. Regularly judged one of the outstanding inland courses in
Britain, it tests the best players but is short enough to give the
less proficient equal enjoyment.
Visitors are made welcome on most days of the year as guests of a
member, or as part of a society or as a member of another
recognised golf club in the UK or abroad. All visitors are treated
as a member for the day and can therefore enjoy all our facilities.
For those yet to make a visit, we can undoubtedly say West Sussex
will make your journey worthwhile.
With plenty to do and see in Arundel and the local area, you may
not need to travel very far. However the surrounding county and
cities also have their own charms, secrets and opportunities for a
great day out. We have added a link to a useful website dedicated
to the promotion of Arundel called
arundel.org.uk, and we
can help with any other interests that you may have.
